3 Ways to Use Benefits.gov as a Resource this Summer

Benefits.gov is committed to connecting you to assistance programs you and your family may be eligible to receive, all year around. As the Summer approaches, we encourage you to take advantage of the resources available for food assistance, child care, and energy assistance.

  1. Find Food Assistance
Do you need help securing food for your household? There are several ways you can help ensure access to nutritious meals this summer. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) offers programs, such as the Summer Food Service Program, that provide free meals to children in low-income communities when school is not in session. You may also qualify for USDA’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, providing financial assistance to households for purchasing groceries at authorized stores.

  1. Secure Affordable Child Care
Are you a parent juggling work or school and need help finding and paying for child care? You may be eligible for the Child Care and Development Fund, administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This program provides access to affordable early care programs, easing the financial burden and allowing parents the opportunity to continue pursuing their education and career.

  1. Discover Energy Assistance
Have you seen your energy bill increase when your air conditioner is in use? HHS offers the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) to assist households with their cooling energy costs and energy-related home repairs. Visit the LIHEAP page for more information on the program and eligibility details. The U.S. Department of Energy shares tips on saving money and energy in your home, including to use ceiling fans and whole house fans to pull air through the house, keep your window coverings closed during the day to block the sun’s heat, and raise your thermostat temperature when you’re sleeping or not home.
